To complement their coastal home, designed by Knickerbocker Group, our landscape architecture team created a cohesive outdoor experience to enhance the home’s coastal site. Primarily used as a serene summer retreat, the homeowners sought a casual garden with abundant pollinators and perennials to provide a high-season pop.
Aster, Goldenrod, Black Eye Susan, Blue Star, and other colorful varietals now flood the gardens with color and texture from May to October. The extensive use of perennials keeps the site low maintenance and allows the homeowners to play a part in its ongoing care. Our team additionally designed a fenced-in vegetable garden where they enjoy idling away warm August afternoons.
When designing the gardens, hardscape, and deck spaces, thoughtful attention was paid to crafting separate spaces to take in the site’s scenery. The porch and stone patio in the front of the home provide shady spots to retreat from the windy waterside, while the back deck and fire pit offer direct sun and sweeping views. For the hardscape, native Mystic Mountain Granite was selected for its blue and green hues which echo the changing colors of the water beyond. Despite the site’s multiple grading and draining problems, unseen solutions above and below ground were devised to mitigate issues and create a welcoming outdoor space that happily hosts quiet moments and more boisterous summer celebrations.
