2019 AIA Maine Design Award: Stoneview Barn

Residential Adaptive Reuse + People’s Choice Award

Stoneview Barn wins AIA Design Award

We are excited to announce Stoneview Barn received a 2019 AIA Maine Design Special Citation in Adaptive Reuse, Residential and also earned the People’s Choice Award! A huge congratulations to the entire team for this incredible achievement.

What the architects say:
Our client sought to preserve this 150-year-old barn and transform its 1,700-square-foot interior into a workshop and entertainment space. The design team reinforced the structure with custom Douglas fir glulam beams and trusses, strengthening the original floor and roof members. Cantilevered beams were also added to support a second-floor deck. The end wall was replaced with a striking glass curtain wall that stretches from the ground to the gable. The interior showcases reclaimed wood siding from the original barn, meticulously stripped of paint to reveal its natural beauty. On the exterior, the barn was revitalized with new red cedar lap siding, trim, and a bronze standing-seam metal roof.

What the jury says:
“This project beautifully exemplifies how tradition and history can be preserved while adapting an existing structure for modern use. The architects’ thoughtful interventions and transformations were executed with precision and care.”
