Mystic Cove

Contemporary harmony on Sebago.

All about the lake

A full remodel of this Sebago Lake property resulted in a contemporary, prairie-style home that feels one with its wooded surround. From the lakeside, sleek glass pairs with rough-hewn red cedar board and batten siding, painted almost black, allowing the home to seamlessly blend with its setting. Inside an elegant mix of color and pattern is thoughtfully balanced to create a home that feels both refined and family friendly.

Longing for their place in Maine

Mystic Cove is deeply rooted in the homeowners’ connection to and love for Maine. Originally from Maine herself, the wife maintains strong ties with much of her family still residing here. Every summer, they return with their daughters to cherish precious family time together. For many years they longed for a place of their own and when a property in one of their favorite locations came on the market they jumped at the opportunity. Although the couple originally sought to undertake a few minor renovations, a site visit with their Houston-based architect, Ken Newberry of Newberry Architecture, expanded their scope to better align with their vision for creating a generational family home.

With a deep understanding of the vernacular and connections to the finest local talent, our team was brought in to manage the construction. Throughout the design-build process, a wonderful collaboration was forged between the homeowners, Newberry Architecture, and Knickerbocker Group with all participants aligning to craft something truly special.

Modern elegance amidst nature

An essential element of any Maine lake home is a strong connection with the outdoors, and Mystic Cove is no exception. One of the guiding principles in the redesign was to strengthen the home’s relationship with nature. Each room now feels innately connected to the site through the usage of expansive windows, native materials, and a complementing color palette.

The floorplan was entirely reworked allowing the main living/kitchen space to flow freely and open to a large, covered porch. Featuring a western red hemlock ceiling, glass balcony, and retractable Lutron screens, the porch is now a favorite gathering spot, day, and night.  Just below, the lower lake level features an entertainment room and bar with sliding doors that open to an outdoor kitchen and trails leading to the gas-fueled fire pit and lake beyond.

A lake house for family and guests

The home’s original two-level screened-in porch was converted into living space and now features a guest room on the lake level, a dining room on the second floor, and an office with impressive views on the third floor. In the dining room, natural light floods the space while built-in cabinetry lacquered in a rich green brings the colors of the outdoors in.

The indoor-outdoor connectivity continues in the primary suite. Decorated in crisp whites, creams, and blush tones, when coupled with the room’s expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the space exudes calm. The primary bath makes a statement with a matte-finish, volcanic limestone Vetralla tub by Victoria and Albert which looks out to the lake beyond.

Every detail considered

For their daughters, the former garage was transformed into two ensuite bedrooms and a bright and cheery playroom, featuring a climbing wall, which now happily entertains dozens of kids on rainy afternoons!

Graciously welcoming, for generations to come…

Mystic Cove far surpassed the homeowners vision and expectations. The couple’s confidence in experimenting with the unexpected created a home that feels warm and inviting and will graciously welcome family and friends for years to come.
